3 Popular Oils used in soap making
For some reason, many people believe that only a few oils can be used when making soap. The truth is that you have some wonderful options, each with distinct properties and characteristics.
Oils create soap that leaves the skin silky smooth while also the main ingredient for fragrance free soaps. In this article, we wanted to provide you with specific information on the most popular oils used in soap making.
- Cocoa Butter – This type of oil adds hardness to the bar of soap. Even if you were to use as little as 5%, the final product would be a nicely formed bar. Keep in mind that while cocoa butter does not produce much lather, you want to be careful how much oil you use, which could eliminate the production of lather altogether. If you want smooth skin, cocoa butter is the way to go. In fact, adding as little as 5% will make a huge difference in the final characteristics of the soap. The fragrance is like warm chocolate, definitely seductive and inviting.
- Olive Oil – Of all oils, this is probably the most popular base. The thing to remember with olive oil is that once the soap is made, it must sit for about four to six weeks to harden (cure). In addition, this type of soap does not produce much lather but more of a creamy substance, which is stable but not overly impressive. However, the result of using olive oil is lustrous skin. The moisturizing qualities of olive oil and its ability to blend beautifully with other types of oils put it at the top of the list.
- Castor Oil – Coming from castor beans, this ingredient produces a softer soap. In addition, while the soap will lather, it is nothing profound. However, castor oil makes an excellent ingredient to add along with other oils. This soap will have a creamy, almost bubbly quality. In addition, castor oil actually helps by reducing trace time.
